Marine Science Building Lab and Equipment Protocol

(policy on students and Faculty using the Marine Science Building Labs and equipment)

Lab Safety Policy

Please read this carefully in reference to lab safety and working in the marine science building labs.

General Lab Safety:

  1. Safety is first priority

  2. Covered Shoes (toes must be hiding) are required in all labs

  3. 1st aid is in the middle prep room

  4. Spill kit and instructions are in each room (wet lab, prep room & Analytical lab)

  5. No working alone

  6. Students and faculty must be checked out before using lab (protocol to be developed)

Lab Space:

  1. Clean up after using equipment, lab bench space, etc.

  2. Anything left out, (works in progress, etc) need to be labeled: Name, any hazardous materials, advisor and date started and date of completion.

  3. Please clean glassware, and after drying, put away glassware.

Spills/Broken glass:

  1. Alert people in lab and contain spill or breakage

  2. If a simple cleanup, please do so, otherwise contact advisor or John Coney in MSB115

Working off hours (other then 8-5)?

  1. Require two people in lab

  2. permission by advisor

  3. complete a checkout process with John Coney, MSB-115

General Lab Notes:

  1. Know the location of the MSDS for the chemicals you are using. (prep room shelf)

  2. Know and use the lab manuals (prep room shelf)

  3. Something not working, out of order, of unsafe please let the lab manager know.

  4. Lab coats, goggles and other safety precautions may be required for some work.
