TUNA TAGGING RESEARCH
Students had an opportunity to learn tuna tagging research methods. These methods are used throughout the Pacific Ocean to learn about migration and catch rates. First the fish has to be caught!
A small yellow fin tuna being measured.
A tag is inserted in the dorsal fin area.
Note the red tag in place below the second dorsal fin. The fish is ready to be released.
This unlucky tuna got "tagged" by a shark.
Sometimes the specimens didn't survive the hook up, and we had to bring them in for supper.
Tuna tagging was successful, with the exception of sharks biting our lines. This fisher needed to eat some tuna heart after a hard day's work.
